Utopia is the first commission in Theatre Absolute’s new artistic programme Humanistan, a short work, written and performed by Amahra Spence.

Amahra Spence is a multidisciplinary artist and creative producer, often using performance, text, digital media and installation. Passionate about carving space for marginalised identities and artists, her work is heavily collaborative and invested in elevating the voices, truths and experiences of being Black in Britain.

Since graduating from a Drama & Performance degree from the University of Worcester, Amahra has worked with organisations including Birmingham REP, Apples & Snakes, Ovalhouse and Talawa Theatre Company. Her most recent productions, ‘Abuelo’ (2016) and ‘Concubine’ (2018) premiered with sold-out runs at Birmingham REP. She has since been awarded an artist bursary from In Good Company, Derby Theatre and Tamasha to create a new show. In 2013, Amahra founded the non-profit organisation MAIA, a cultural production agency that creates platforms and projects to champion racial justice and social equity through the arts.
