As we close for Christmas, we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported our work this year both with Theatre Absolute and at our Shop Front Theatre.
The ‘Are We Where We Are’ project was a huge success over the last 2 years with 15 writers and performers commissioned. Sincere thanks to all our partners, Talking Birds, Warwick Arts Centre, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry City Council, Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England for supporting our idea! Thanks too to Glenn Noble and Coventry University, the talented writers, artists and creatives, passionate volunteers, fabulous supporters and audiences, who have made it such an inspiring project. Our new work HUMANISTAN is on the horizon and we aim to be in development with it next year – more to come!
Early in the year, we were proud to create a pilot Shop Front Festival alongside the brilliant Lou Lomas and fabulous Orit Azaz. The festival saw over 60 performances take place in 33 businesses, shops and places in the city centre. It was so well received and thanks go to everyone who worked so hard and got behind the festival including the wonderful Trish Willetts, and Coventry BID, Clare Mitchell and the City Council team, funding partners including the Heart of England Community Foundation and Backstage Trust and the local businesses who took a risk and opened their shop doors and of course never forgetting the incredible artists and participants who danced, performed and created moments of theatrical magic in the precincts, places and empty shops of Cov.
Huge thanks to Gareth Roberts and all at the BBC and in particular to the ever inspiring Siobhan Harrison for inviting us to partner them on the Two Tone Taxi Summer tours and thanks to actor Paul Nolan & Famous Faisal Riaz for being the ultimate and legendary Cov tour guide and driver! It was a pleasure to show people our wonderful city.
The festival and taxi tours were supported by City of Culture Trust – a big cheer to Jacqui, Laura, Michael, Nicole, Emma, Jen, Juliet and all the team for helping to enable the projects.
Finally we must thank our brilliant board, and everyone who hires, and attends performances and events, at the Shop Front Theatre. You literally help keep the lights on in this fabulous theatre which was 9 years old last month. It remains the only professional theatre space of its kind in the UK and it couldn’t be in a better city – COVENTRY! Happy Christmas all and here’s to a wonderful 2019.
